SELF-SABOTAGE

My mom would always say “nor be only persin wey dey fly for nite na im be witch” the witches in your village are not the only things blocking your success. There is something that is hindering you from taking that walk into your street of success, and that is the spirit of self-sabotage.

I recognize that there are a lot of forces that can be against you, I mean, this is Africa, “na here all the kinikon kinikon dey” but I like to deal with the “self-factor” first because with that one out of the way, you can then concentrate.

Now, one special way you can sabotage yourself is by jumping from one business to the other, today you are selling tomatoes, tomorrow is okra. Today you are doing this next tomorrow you have jumped to that.

My dear, “na wetin persin dey do na im e take dey be professional” because a career path is not all that you need it to be right now doesn’t always mean you should quit and start with something else.

If you work on it long enough, you might begin to see the pitfalls and all the loopholes, you will begin to learn on the job and become better at foreseeing its rough patches.

When I was growing up, I had an aunt who sells palm oil, in some seasons, she would buy the oil in large quantity and store them and when the price begin to rise, she will bring hers out and sell at the new price while she had bought at a really low rate when it was cheaper.

That’s the kind of wisdom that comes from having done a business for a long time and studying it. Tell me, how a person, who just started that same business with no experience, is supposed to know all that vital detail of the business? Don’t forget, the key to acquiring proficiency at any task is repetition.

You start selling today and it didn’t quite turn out the way you wanted so you switched to something else. People start talking about a new business idea that is lucrative and you run and follow that one. Moving with the wind like a leaf, that’s not how to succeed, that’s how to sabotage yourself and then blame it on your village witch.

You start complaining “oooo dem don come again ooo, people dey use this market take chop before ooo, but as I just take start am, e just bounce for my head” why wouldn’t it bounce on you, when you just can’t persevere?

You might have studied law in school, you might have studied engineering, economics, entrepreneur or whatsoever and graduated with an exceedingly good grade but there is something that job experience gives to you and your first class degree can’t hold a candle to it.

If you want to succeed, you have to stay at a job, career or business and work on it, not just spending less time than a conversation and then coming out with some flimsy excuses about your village witch.

Self-sabotage that comes as a lack of consistency is a killer, don’t allow it kill your financial stability; nip it in the bud. Be like a flag, move with the wind while firmly tied to a rigid pole…
